WPC English name :Wood-Plastic Composites One of the building materials

Main Characteristics

Wood-Plastic Composites (WPC) are based on high-density polyethylene and wood fibers, which determine certain properties akin to both plastics and wood.

1.Excellent Processing Performance: Wood-plastic composites contain plastics and fibers, allowing them to be processed similarly to wood. They can be sawed, nailed, and planed using woodworking tools, with nail-holding capability significantly superior to other synthetic materials. Mechanical performance exceeds that of wood. Nail-holding strength is generally three times that of wood and five times that of particle board.

2.Good Strength Performance: With plastics as a component, wood-plastic composites exhibit good elasticity modulus. Furthermore, the inclusion of fibers and thorough mixing with plastics provide physical and mechanical properties comparable to hardwood, including resistance to compression and bending. Their durability is notably better than ordinary wood materials, with surface hardness typically 2 to 5 times that of wood.

3.Water and Decay Resistance, Long Service Life: Compared to wood, WPC materials and products are resistant to strong acids and alkalis, water, and corrosion. They do not harbor bacteria, are resistant to insect infestation, and do not promote fungal growth. Their service life can exceed 50 years.

4.Excellent Adjustability: Through additives, plastics can undergo polymerization, foaming, curing, and modification, allowing for adjustments in density, strength, and meeting specific requirements such as anti-aging, antistatic properties, and flame resistance.

5.Environmental Benefits: The greatest advantage lies in recycling waste materials, enabling 100% recyclability. They are biodegradable and do not contribute to "white pollution", making them truly green and environmentally friendly products.

6.Wide Range of Raw Materials: The plastic raw materials used in producing wood-plastic composites are primarily high-density polyethylene or polypropylene, while wood fibers can be wood powder, rice husks, or wood fibers. Additionally, small amounts of additives and processing aids are required.

7.Customizable Shapes and Sizes: They can be manufactured into any desired shape and size according to requirements.

8.UV Stability and Good Coloring Properties.


Material Technology

With the development of wood-plastic composite materials, the plastic raw materials used in the production of wood-plastic composites include not only high-density polyethylene or polypropylene, but also polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS). The processing technology has evolved from the early single-screw extruders to the second-generation conical twin-screw extruders, and then to initial pelletization by parallel twin-screw extruders, followed by shaping through conical screw extrusion. These advancements address difficulties in plasticization, poor aging resistance, poor creep resistance, color consistency, durability, and tensile strength, among other issues. [1] Many research institutes and factories in China have accumulated years of research and development, ensuring that the WPC (wood-plastic composite) materials manufactured meet the requirements of GB/T 24137, ASTM D7031, ASTM D7032, and BS DD CEN/TS 15534-3. [2]

Application Scope

One of the primary uses of wood-plastic composite materials is to replace solid wood in various fields. The most extensive application is in building products, accounting for 75% of the total use of wood-plastic composites.
